Why the Netherlands?

Discover why the Netherlands is one of Europe’s top destinations for au pairs, especially those on a budget!

Popular canal in Amsterdam for au pairs to meet with friends

Live like a local in one of Europe’s most welcoming and forward-thinking countries. With its storybook canals, tulip-lined bike paths, and charming narrow houses, the Netherlands offers an ideal blend of history, culture, and modern living. Whether you're cycling through open fields dotted with windmills, wandering the cobbled streets of a historic town, or relaxing at a sunny canal-side café, daily life here feels both magical and laid back.

English is widely spoken, making it easy to communicate, settle in, and make new friends. The Netherlands is also a well-established destination for au pairs, meaning you'll be joining a built-in international community (we’ll introduce you!). Most host families live in or near cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, or The Hague—beautiful, family-friendly locations with excellent public transport and a high quality of life.

Best of all, au pairing in the Netherlands comes with incredible support. Host families are legally required to cover your housing, meals, and weekly allowance—and also pay for your museum pass, Dutch language course, health insurance, phone plan, and even half of your round-trip airfare. The Dutch government (IND) has set clear standards to ensure that au pairs are treated with care and respect, making the Netherlands a safe, enriching, and exciting place to live.

From weekend trips to charming towns or nearby countries, to cozy evenings spent with your host family or new au pair friends—your adventure in the Netherlands starts here.
